Everyone loves to hate Vista. Believe me, I know where you are coming from, I hated it too. Then I took the plunge and installed it. No, its not perfect, but I find it to be refreshingly polished and a huge step up from XP.

First of all, the installer is much cleaner and more polished than XP. My install experience went flawlessly, until I tried to install nVidia drivers and it froze. To be clear, this is the only time it has ever frozen or crashed. Now the crash didnt seem to have any negative effect, as the driver did fully install.

Without question, at least for me, the largest improvement in Vista is security. Even administrators must elevate their permissions to do administrator tasks. Now, this may not be all that important, as most users will turn off UAC, or just click allow every time, but it will cause application developers to write applications that can be run as a regular user. Why is this good? Well, in user mode, its pretty difficult to screw up the computer.

Overall, Vista is extremely polished. I can think of a million different ways that XP is inconsistent and buggy, but Vista has a much more unified feel. Even the included applications are similar in look and feel. Speaking of included applications, they are actually quite good. Windows Mail is a million times better than Outlook Express and the new Windows Calendar has a lot of functionality.
